ok, you get prize for headscratcher of the day. The above post on genforum seems to indicate an original spelling and that the name comes from Lithuania. Be sure to check the entire thread, since it shows other persons researching.
In order to be certain, you need to trace Catherine herself, and see if her documents show a place of birth.

ps I used the alternate spelling and come up with over 500 entries in google... bet it would work if I tried them in one of the translator pages, but thought I might leave some fun for you.
