Question:

Trying to find where my last name came from. Last name is Canose, and I heard it was italian or something.?

I heard there was also a castle by the same name or close to it somewhere in Italy. Any history buffs out there care to shed some light and help with this random question?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: First, Princess's given an incorrect name: it isn't Casnossa but Canossa. It's a very little town in Emilia Romagna region, in Reggio Emilia province. But may be the name is Canosa. That is a small town too, but it is in Puglia region, in the South. Its complete name is Canosa di Puglia, a very, very ancient centre that arrives us from IVⰯVⰠcentury before BC. In the Roman Empire it was called 'Canusium'. The last name Canosa derives from the name of the city, and you have to know that in the local dialect they pronounce it 'Can㲵s', "Kah- n㲨-ou-s''', ah like in 'are', oh like in 'saw' and the 's' very marked. That could explain why in English there's an 'e' at the end of the name. This name we find in Italy still now, overall in Puglia, and some quantity in Basilicata and Abruzzo regions. Hoping it's the right answer.
