Question:

Who was the father of Abraham J. Dukes born 24 Jun 1809?

Abraham J. Dukes married Martha Ann Luker Smith 27 Jul 1843 in Tuskegee, AL. They had four children in Notasulga, Macon, AL. This family migrated to Texas in 1860. The 1860 Census finds them in Louisiana.

Abraham J. Dukes died 16 Sep 1892 in Mount Pleasant, Titus, Texas. After Martha Ann Luker Smith Dukes died after 1870, Abraham marriedLaura Jane Eslinger Burlison 25 Dec 1879 in Mt. Vernon, Franklin, Texas.

My question is: Who were the parents of Abraham J. Dukes?
Thank you.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but I pulled up a record that says his father was John Duke, born 1780 in Orangeburg SC, died 1841 in Red River, TX.

The mother is listed as "Ann" 1790-1850.

Other siblings:
Joseph Hazelwood Dukes
Thomas Dukes
James Dukes
Gabriel Dukes
Alexander Dukes

There's also mention of "other children":
Mary Ann Duke F abt 1805 in Grainger, Cumberland, Tennessee, USA
William G Duke M 19 Dec 1805 in Grainger, Cumberland, Tennessee, USA
John H Duke M Jul 1811 in Grainger, [county], Tennessee, USA
James Matthew Duke M 20 Nov 1816 in [city], Grainger, Tennessee, USA

There's a large concentration of Dukes in Orangeburg, even today. It shouldn't be hard to find them in records in SC, and you'll probably be able to find records through the DAR on other members of the family. They can be reached through their website at http://www.dar.org

IGI lists John's father as Michael Dukes. That brought me to this site which is pretty interesting: http://home.att.net/~xcc2all/scduke/duke...

BTW, the Dukes name is freely intertwined with the Duke name. I'd research under both to see what you uncover...

One more thing...this researcher did much of the published info on the family and is posting often on GenForum. You may try contacting her directly for more information on the early years of your line and to verify that you are a descendent of the Orangeburg Dukes.... teague_l@bellsouth.net
