Position:Home>Genealogy> Where would I start my search on my family name?

Question:

Where would I start my search on my family name?

Where would I start and what would I do next on trying to find all of the members in my family dated back years and years as many as I can find. I'd like to know where they came from. Etc. The last name would be McCoy. I do knw that Randolph McCoy the man who was in the Hatfield McCoy feud is my great, great, great grandfather. For my name is listed in the book of "The Real McCoy's" but i'd like to go back years and years further. Where to go from here?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Welcome to the McCoy descendants.
I am a descendant of Randolf's brother, of the non-famous for feuding with "them there" Hatfields, McCoys.

You will find our information in the "History of Hancock County TN" book, as well as "all over" the place on the internet.

Careful though, these ancestors practiced neither birth control nor original naming of children.

As I recall, someone proposed that Samuel McKee of VA as the ancestor grandfather for Randolf (alternative spelling) and of course then, for mine as well. The libraries in Grainger and Hawkins Counties in TN will be a "gold mine" of information for you.

Someone must have them connected to Adam and Eve by now!

I went straight for MacCoy and MacKee on the Scottish tartan websites. Some of those sites have received so many requests for McCoy information, they've started Associations in the US.

On the other end, a lot of McCoy(s) are listed in the NARA ARC (US achives).

By the way...
Although upteentimes removed, we are cousins!
