Question:

Can anyone tell me anything about the surname FRESTLE?

All I know is that it is from Ireland, probably Co.Mayo

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My first suggestion is that you ask yourself "what is my DOCUMENTATION that the name does come from Ireland?"
I did a bit of checking on the name, and find one source mentioning Germany; and some other places concerning a woman with the last name in England. Nothing I saw at all, connected to Ireland in any way.
Going out on a limb... your source could be family tradition. Many times, people get into hard core research and find that family tradition is NOT accurate. Unless you have solid records to show that Grandpa Frestle WAS born in Ireland, you really don't "know".
IF working with traditions passed down.. remember that unless it is based on grandpa's OWN statement of where he was born, it is subject to verification.
I always encourage people to shift from the idea that they are searching for a surname.. to searching for individual ancestors, and being focused on locating proof. Using Grandpa as example, you would need to locate all possible documents, and when Grandpa is the "immigrant" ancestor, that includes hopefully census, naturalization records, or any other original record.
