Question:

Alfred Southern, SC/GA/TN, 1800s?

Do you have any information on Alfred J. Southern, born between 1815-1841 in SC? He grew up in northern GA, joined the Confederate army in Gilmer County, GA, then moved to TN before 1870. He lived out his later years in Williamson County, TN, where his children lived. He was first married to Sarah Unknown, before 1860 in GA. He was (2) married to Martha Unknown, before 1870 in TN. They had no children. His children with his first wife included Reuben W. "Wash" Southern, born 1858 in GA. If you can give me any concrete information about Alfred, or you have researched him, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

BTW the reason for the ambiguity on his age is because his age varies widely in the Census from one decade to the next

I can't give you concrete information. But...
have you tried posting your query on
genforum and rootsweb?
There might be someone who has the
ancestor in common.

From reading your additional BTW,
mixing-up the generations of Sr. and Jr.
of the same family is more common
than having the possible birth year off
by +/- 2 or so years on census records.

It looks like, from what you wrote, that you
will need to transition from census and war
records to the more obscure "1800 gasp"
records, such as tax lists, wills/probate,
and property ownership. If it were my
ancestor, I would start with potential locality
in SC through
usgenweb.org
archive search
SC
and all soundex variations for the surname
Southern:
rootsweb
soundex.

Take heart, you will probably find at least
one other descendant looking for the same
ancestor.

oh...and remember to google the name,
Alfred Southern,
for websites with the lineage listed.

Happy hunting!
