Question:

Ready to do something about "those" gedcoms?

gedcomrelief@yahoogroups.com

Looks like there is finally a place to alert others about gedcoms that are just plain wrong! (If you don't know what a gedcom is--well...maybe someone else can explain this type of file better than I can!) Now, I already know the jokes inherent in the name of that type of file--so not here please! Perhaps you can do your own question, such as "Have you heard the latest about those gedcoms?" Thank you for venting about the gedcoms. Maybe we can actually do something about them?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It would sure be nice if something could be done. I wrote to someone one time because I found my grandfather in their GEDCOM. I wrote a polite note and asked how they connected to the family and how I enjoy meeting cousins. I also pointed out that my grandfathers birth year was off by one year in their file and gave them the correct information. Well, you would have thought that I slapped their mother or something. The lady called me a liar and told me that the person I was speaking about was NOT my grandfather. HMM! Not MY grandfather? You could have knocked me over with a feather! As if I didn't know my OWN grandfather... After all of this transpired, I went back in and looked at her file and saw that it had over 100,000 names in it and of course- none of it was sourced. She was just a name collector.

I have had it a few times since where well meaning people have referred me to her file for information. I just smile and say Thank you and move on...Some things just aren't worth it!!
