Question:

Where do i go to find things about my great grandfather (Napoleon Wisniewski)?

i want to research my family tree. My great-grandfather came from Poland to New york during the war between Russia and Turkey. I want to know sites that would help me find out more information like what ship he came on and any records of him.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Finding them on the 1930 census in Milwaukee was a little amusing, seeing a discrepancy between when they say they arrived in US, when the children were born & where, and how long they'd been married. However it does appear to place their migration during the years Ellis Island operated as an immigrant intake center. If you get lucky and hit the right spelling or set of circumstances you might find the couple, or at least Napoleon. It appears they came different times, and likely the youngest, Frank, was born in WI.

Ships' passenger lists from Ellis Island may tell interesting things like where their home port was or even home, who paid for passage, where they intend to head, sometimes height hair and eye coloring, ya never know. I think they're 2 pages for each person. People were short!

This might be him:
Name Residence Age Born* Arrived Ship Passenger
Record
Wischnewski, Napolian Malowisti 28 1876 Nov 16 1904 Frankfurt

*Pouline seems likely a 2nd wife, which would account for anomalies mentioned above.
