Start with yourself then your parents and grandparents.
use websites like familysearch.org and rootsweb as tools. Heritagequest thru your library to look at census records. visit a family history center in your town.
Most of all document with birth, death and marriage certificates to prove your work. NEVER believe what you find on the net!!!
