Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If your ancestors were Choctaw or Cherokee freedmen (slaves belonging to tribal members freed after the Civil War) they were given full tribal status through the Civil Rights Acts after the Civil War. You have to get documentation. Check with the Choctaw Nation Of Oklahoma and the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. It doesn't matter if some non-black tribal members are racist against blacks; the law is on your side, and has been since the 1860s!
