Question:

I have checked all name meaning websites....no luck, anyone know the origin of the name Lannis??

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The problem would be that the name is found in too many countries. It's Greek, Russian, German, Irish, English, Scottish, Hebrew (yes Hebrew was listed as a nationality on immigration records). When that many countries are involved the name sites don't touch the name. You'll notice it rare that they even do 2-3 countries for surnames...let alone 7 nationalities.

So to find the origin of your name you need to start some solid basic research. Trace back your family until you find the immigrant ancestor. Find the Naturalization documents for that person and find out what country he came from and then figure out when he came. Then check the passenger records to see which port he left to make the trip here. Look for an exit visa which would have been issued by the magistrate of that town or province to see what town was listed as his hometown. Then you go back to that town and figure out if they kept civil registers or relied on the town priest/minister to keep records (especially in very rural areas where people weren't literate). If the priest/minister kept the records then you need to find the church that baptised your ancestor and use that in lieu of his birth certificate. Go from there for the preceding generations...
