Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You do it one generation at a time. First ask your living ancestors - parents, grandparents, about their parents and grandparents. You will need to document dates and places of births, marriages, deaths. Once you've learned all you can from the living you can begin finding their families on census and whatever all other documentation you can find.
