Position:Home>Genealogy> Where do you think the Basque came from?

Question:

Where do you think the Basque came from?

I was recently looking at Basque history and everything and nobody seems to know where they're from or how their language originated.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Basques are no mystery of modern science. Their language is unique in that it was largely unaffected by Latin (most languages that would have been linguistic cousins were most likely gradually discontinued in favor of other migrating or more influential groups) and no languages that would act as a bridge survive today.

Genetically, their closest relatives are the British and Irish, so most likely the Basques were a distantly related Celtic subgroup, or a culture that extensively coinhabited the Iberian peninsula or some other part of Western Europe prior to the Celtic migration to the British Isles.

They are not related to the Roma (gypsies) as one post answered - the Roma were among the last groups to have arrived in Europe and were without a homeland. The Basque were already an established people when mentioned by Romans and probably were known to Carthagenian and Greek colonists on the Iberian peninsula centuries before.
