Question:

Who gave us our names and our last names?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Last name developed over time. Sam who lived on a hill became Sam Hill and his children took the last name Hill but Tom that lived on a hill also became known as Tom Hill and his children became know as hill. Man named Jack had a son and his sons became known as Jackson and their children took the name Jackson. But there was more than one Jack.
People with the same surname are not necessarily related. A person who displays a coat of arms just because it has their name is like someone putting up a picture of a famous person with their name and claiming him as their ancestor whether they know he is or not.
Some names came from occupations. Tom the Barber became Tom Barber and his children took the name Barber. Other occupational names were carpenter, clark(clerk), smith, jones etc.\
Some were named for the towns they came from or if they lived close to a castle they took the name of the castle (family that lived there) whether they were related or not.
