Position:Home>Genealogy> What is the origin of the surname "Rhynerson"?

Question:

What is the origin of the surname "Rhynerson"?

Sounds German, especially because of "Rhyne," but the suffix -son throws me off. I don't know of any German last names that end with -son. I can deduce that the name is Germanic, but I'd like to get more precise if I can.

This is a very uncommon surname as far as I can tell. Most Rhynersons seem to be concentrated in Kansas or Missouri.

Sometimes the name is also spelled as Reynierson, Rinearson, Rynearson, Rynerson, Reynerson, Rhynearson, Rhinerson, Reynierson.

I asked the Rhynerson I know, but she has no clue what nationality the name is.

Thanks for your help.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The name "Reinerson" is Norwegian and Scandinavian, so it's likely that the variations are the same. I think the ending "-son" is not as common in German as it is in Scandinavia.

The majority of the surnames you gave seems to be concentrated in the Great Lakes region of the US, which could mean a familial relationship, with variations in how the name is spelled. Americanizing European names often leads to strange spellings.

"Reinertson" is yet another possible variation, which is also, by the way, Norwegian.
