Question:

If a person was born in the year 1971, why would the begining #?

I have a really interesting question, I was born in 1971 and no one has been able to answer this for me... Everyone born around the same year #`s usually there SS number starts with a 5 mine starts off with a 1 can anyone explain this to me.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes. The first three digits have nothing to do with time. The first three digits are allocated by states. So, if your SS# begins with a "1" it means that you were living in New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania when your application was received, as these states are allocated the prefixes starting with "1".

050-134 New York (NY)
135-148 New Jersey (NJ)
159-211 Pennsylvania (PA)

While there are occasional transfers of numbers, this is how the system works. The first three numbers refer to location of applicant.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

ps -- it's no surprise that your friends have "5s" as "5" is given over to the most states.
