Question:

Why would there be a Z on a NHS card circa 1946?

My mother's NHS card doesn't appear to have originated in UK - it has been remarked that there is a 'Z' on it indicating that she came from the Channel Islands. Who can verify this?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My NHS card was issued in London in 1948 and contains the suffix 4AZ this was part of my civilian identity card number also issued in London earlier in the war years, prior to my call up for military service. I did not come from the Channel Islands.
