In the 20th century there will be birth marriage and death certificates - if you're US. Before that may be church, family bibles, newspaper and cemetery records - and of course US and State Census records. By 1850 A John Treadman born about 1831 was at Lackawaxen, Pike, PA, and an Emanuel Tredman born about 1786 Germany with family in New York City. You may find record of their immigration at http://castlegarden.org/ if you get back that far and learn that one of those is yours. If your family's one of the more recent immigrants post-1892 you could try ellisisland.org instead.

Oh! Expect constant "mutations" in spelling of the surname. Be creative!
