Question:

Arabian Names?

i have some questions about arab/muslim surnames.
i know some people from tunis, lebanon, syria etc. and they have surnames like: "Ali Ben Mohammad". "Ben or bent" means "son/daughter-of".
So "bin" (for exaple: Bin laden) means the same but in which lenguage?
If my first my last name is "Ali Ben Khattab" and is have a son named "Fayys" is he "Fayys Ben Ali"?so THEY dont have "ONE SURNAME" following generations?u know what i mean?(sry english isnt mother-leng.)
what does "Al","El" and "Ibn" in their last names mean?
for example:
"Muhammad ibn Raschid Al Maktum" or
"Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali"

please explain it to me.define the names.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Ibn means 'child of'. Al means 'for'. Bin means 'child of'. just a different dialect. Saudi is different from Egyptian and so on. I think El may mean 'of'. This may indicate that family is being noted for an event, or the place they came from...a town or village.
Go to zaba.com for translation of names. Also try the Arab/English dictionary on line. You may only find classic Arabic, unless you go to a site that is specific to Lebanon, Syria etc.
