Question:

How can I find out a cause of death for a family memeber that died recently?

We live in Maryland and his autopsy was done in Baltimore. We were told by a family member that the ME ruled that he died of natural causes, but considering the circumstances and his young age, we are having trouble believing that is the truth.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The ME won't take your call. So forget that. If you are an heir of the man, you have a right to a copy of his death certificate. His death certificate will list the cause(s) of death and any contributing factors. It is onfile at the Baltimore County building and you simply fill out a form, pay the fee and get a certified copy of the death certificate.

If you aren't his heir, then the law says it's none of your business. You can still get one if you try, but as a matter of integrity, it might be better to let it be.

BTW, the autopsy is not a public record. It's a medical record and it IS covered by many privacy laws, but particularly HIPAA. It only becomes a matter of public record when there's an inquest (a coroner's court). Otherwise, if there's no foul play, it's not public record and non-heirs don't get copies.

My condolences to you and your family.
