Origin on last name Angarano for college course?

Angarano

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You can have some fun with this. The first thing I found is Villa Angarano in a town called Bassano del Grappa (Basin of Grapes) in the area of Vicenza.

Normally, we might come to the conclusion that the family was from this region...but no!

When I run the family name through immigration records, the overwhelming majority come from Southern Italy...and even one from Scandinavia.

One town that many are tracing back to is called Marigliano. Many of the handwritten passenger manifests are nearly illegible under town of last residence, though.

The vast majority sailed from the port of Naples and arrived at either Castle Clinton or Ellis Island in NYC. The majority arrived between 1898 and 1922.

The root of the name is "angariare" which means "to flay". So Angarano means "one who flays".
