www.familysearch.com
www.ancestry.com
www.genealogy.com

Also, yahoo groups has lots of genealogy groups that help alot too. It takes time to find the one that works. What i did in the beginning is to go to www.google.com and did a search of whatever name i was searching example:
+firstname+surname
it should give you loads of sites to search thru.
