Question:

Does any one know where I can find information about my haitian ancestors online for free?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well...yes and no.

Haitian genealogy records are a mess. Haiti is not a wealthy country and they don't have the resources to digitize their BMD records. They don't have many records at all on the internet. But the records you need are available...just not "free".

The LDS has the majority of records. Here's a place to go through and see what will work for you. There isn't going to be another way to start tracking, unless you have the name of the village where your family lived and if you were lucky enough that they were Catholic or Christian. The fact is that Haiti based its government and recordkeeping on the French tradition of having the records kept by the parish priest. If you can find the parish where the first ancestor was baptized, you have a point of reference and can work from there. If they weren't Catholic, you can hope to find records in an Anglican parish, but short of that you're not going to find more on them.
