Question:

What is Rymers Point that I saw on a sign post situated in Suffolk United Kindom?

Hi,
When I was on holliday in Suffolk United Kindom,I saw a sign post directing one to Rymers Point, but I could not find it, what is it,what does it mean in relation to the name Rymer. Trying to trace where the name Rymer originated from.
Thanks
Annie

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It appears that Rymer Point was once the meeting place of 9 parishes in Suffolk, each of which was stretched at this area to allow them to reach the river water, which was, of course, a valuable commodity at one time.
From looking at maps, it appears that the river may long have dried up, or been dried up. All that remains is the building known as Rymer House, just to the west of RAF Honington, near Thetford. It seems quite likely that both the house, and the point were named for local folk with the surname Rymer.
You can view a modern map of where Rymer House is at the Streetmap link below.
You can see an old map, which shows Rymer Point labelled, by searching for "IP24 2PN" as an address at the Old Maps website.
I suspect that the road-sign you saw was actually for the modern day business park in the same location using the name "Rymer Point"
I hope that that helps to give you some background on the area of interest!
