Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Somewhere in or near the Balkans, but I wouldn't be specific to the Czech republic just because that's the only place you got hits. The region is overwhelmingly poor, so using computers and setting up websites isn't a priority. Focus on the linguistics, not web hits, and you'll find it's somewhere between Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and eastern Hungary.

The other possibility is that you're looking at a sacramental record and the spelling has been "Latinized" from the days when the RCC put everything in Latin. My great-aunt Bernice's baptismal record says her name is "Bernicium"...that's just how the priest translated it. But in the vernacular, she was still "Bernice."
