Ive been trying to search a part of my family history~The crooms from Broadstairs kent!I need help!?

Ive tried my hardest & they were quite a well known family in Broadstairs working down on the seafront with boats etc...There are 2 brothers Frank & Jack Croom.(my gt.grandfather & uncle,also my Gt.grandmother called Voilet Croom)I'd like to no of free web sites which can help me or just how to get started with my search of my family history.Anyone with any info please let me no! At some ponit one of the brothers used to run the lord nelson pub in broadstairs also! Many thanks to anyone who can help me? X
