Where is a good place to start...?

...looking for info on past relatives from Kentucky. I haven't the slightest idea where to begin and nearly every site I find, thinks I know what I'm doing. Can anyone help?

sorry, my mom is the only living relative that I can talk to from her side and she has a hard time remembering. my dad, who is deceased, has one living sister and she's in her 90's.

I've found one site that 'includes' our family but, doesn't give much history.
