Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Is he actually Greek? Or is he an expatriot living in Greece? If he's an expatriot living abroad, start by contacting the Embassy for his country in Greece and explaining that you are trying to find your father and can they help.

You can always go through the international directories. The most comprehensive site is http://www.infobel.com

Another thing is whether he's religious or not. If he's Orthodox, then that's a little hard to track because he's not unique. But if he's Anglican...and there aren't that many Anglican churches in Greece...I'd write to every church where he might worship. Explain to the priest/minister that you're looking for your long-lost father and can he help reunite you. If your father is worshipping in his congregation, he'll know what to do.

Pull out your birth certificate and find all the clues you can on there. Does it give his date of birth? Place of birth? Nationality? Armed with that, start snooping. If he immigrated from Greece to your country, your country has records on him. If he was born in your country and immigrated to Greece...your country has even more records on him. The trick is learning how to use "the system" to your advantage.

Finally, pick your mom's brain for the names of any family or friends he had. See if you can find them and have them help you locate him. I recently headed up my HS reunion search committee. I had to find 190 people I hadn't seen since 1981. I found all but 5. There was only 1 person where we were able to track down his sister and she could honestly say she didn't know where he is...and that's because he was homeless in Nevada...about 2700 miles away. We did eventually find him and someone paid for a ticket for him to come home. So nothing is impossible. It only took us 3 months to find a homeless guy half way across the country. So if you find the right person with the right information, you can find your dad in a country as small and open as Greece.
