Question:

Tracing the names Lampi and Roach?

Does anyone know where these names originate from? Where my ancestors lived? If there have been any famous Lampis or Roaches in the past?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If nobody along the way Anglicized the names, they could both be of British origin.

Lampi might be a variant spelling of Lambie (also written Lamby, L'ami, Lammie, Lampey), which is a patronymic (a surname identifying the original bearer's father) based on the Old Norse masculine name Lambi (which comes from the word <lambi> 'lamb'). In England, it'd be most likely for the descendant of a Scandinavian settler in what's known as the Danelaw.

The English family name Roach may occasionally derive from a placename in France, but it more often comes from a Middle English or Old French word for 'rock', and was given to someone who lived near a notable one.
