Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Most sites I have ever seen are free, meaning somebody else pays. Even ancestry.com has free resources, even though many are subscription only. Rootsweb.com is all free, paid by advertisers.

Familysearch.org is free. There is a lot that's free or at extremely nominal cost if you go to your nearest LDS Family History Center.

Taxpayer-funded libraries are free, as are strolls though cemeteries with your notebook and digital camera. Chats interviewing your living family for all they recall about their parents and grandparents is free too.
