Civil War Death Certificate???

When someone died during the Civil War, did they issue a death certificate? It appears the ancestor I am looking for died during the civil war in Arkansas. He was not killed in action though from what I can tell. I can find the roster for his company and regiment and it only says died next to his name and gives a date and place. The ones that died in battle says killed next to their names....I was just wondering if they issued death certificates or not. I am now curious as to what he died from. Thanks!!


Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The US didn't issue death certificates until 1868-72, depending on the state. Some came even later.

But if he did die in the Civil War, whether from combat or illness, it will be in his military service record. The National Archives has records from both the Union and CSA. Here's a link where you can explore and see if you can find him or order his service records:
