Question:

I am a third iroquoi indian and would like to find my relatives and history, please help!?

My grandmother was half indian and once lived in Grayling MI. she was not allowed to tell anyone she was half indian because, she would be looked down upon. However I am PROUD to be indian and feel privilledged to be, and I also enjoy the almost black eyes and high cheek bones that have been passed down to myself and children. I know it was different back then, but now I want to know of my heiritage. Any one with answers please reply to me either personally or with an answer. Also I have heard I should have a blue card tp prove my indian background has anyone heard of this?? Thanks to any who help. Much Appreciated

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You can't be a third unless one mother carried you for 4.5 months and the other carried you for 4.5 months and your father was an Iroquois, dear. Most of us have two parents, not three.

If your grandmother was half, your mother or father was 1/4th and you are 1/8th, assuming everyone married non-Iroquois.

The best way to find out is to find your grandmother's parents. Her birth certificate, SSN application. marriace license, death certificate or obituary may all give you clues.

is a start for your heritage. You'll find "Iroquois" is a term for a confederation of six tribes.

Most Indian tribes who get benefits or have a proud history have official rolls; the color of the card you carry in your wallet doesn't matter.
