Where does my last name Armatrading come from?

my grandad was Red Indian but raised is St Kitts and i have his last name but it doesnt sound very indian

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The name showed up in the Antilles in the 1600s. It's extremely obscure (at least by Western hemisphere standards) but appears to have gotten there from England. My educated guess would be it got there either from a sailor who left it behind, maybe a trader, or a bureaucrat sent to the region by the English government who married a local and started a family there.

In addition to St. Kitts & Nevis, I've found traces of it in Jamaica, Belize and the Panama Canal zone.
