Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If you go to http://www.familysearch.org you can get started without going anywhere. They have a genealogy software package that is free for downloading. Click on the "download paf" link about half way down the page, then just follow the instructions. Once you get the software installed you can get started. Begin with yourself and your parents, go back as far as you can, ask your parents about grandparents etc. Once you have gone as far as you can yourself, you can start looking at familysearch.org and start putting in names that you already have to see if there is any information that you don't have already.

There is also a place to locate a Family History Center near you on the familysearch.org webpage. If you do the advanced search you can narrow the area down to city/postal code. When you go to the Family History Center you will find alot of people that are there to help you. THEY WILL NOT DO THE WORK FOR YOU... But they will surely help you get going in the right direction, they DO NOT charge for helping you. You will have access to all the census records and many other microfilms. If they don't have the microfilm you need there, you can order from Salt Lake City for a nominal charge, you can even get the microfilm permanently at your local FHC for a little more $.

Also there are alot of genealogy groups at Yahoo. You can join one or more of them and find help too. for instance:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/california...

I know the owner of that group and she is a wiz at finding records in CA.

Good luck...
