Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I've tried a few variations on your spelling but can't find a ship that matches.
From the Commonwealth War Graves site (www.cwgc.org), which lists casualties (deaths) from WW1 & WW2, there is no Frederick Gledstone listed, so if was on active service on board a ship that sank during WW1 (1914-18) he survived.
There are 5 'Gledstones' listed as casualties but none were in the navy.
However, I did find the index of his birth registration - Frederick Ernest Gledstone born in Newcastle, registered July-Sept 1879, birth certificate no. 10b 15.

From a search of the 1891 census, I can give you the following information;-
Frederick Ernest Gledstone (age 11 - scholar, born in Newcastle) was living at 3 Durham Terrace, Stranton, Hartlepool with his parents Thomas Gledstone (age 43 - engineer foreman, born in North Shields) & June Ann Gledstone (age 35 - born in Birtley, Co. Durham), his brother Thomas A. Gledstone (age 17 - steam engine maker fitter - born in Newcastle) & his sister Ethel Gledstone (age 6 - scholar, born in Hartlepool).

From the 1881 census;-
Frederick Ernest Gledstone (age 1) was living at 50 Milbank Crescent, Hart, Co. Durham with his parents Thomas Gledstone (age 33 - engine fitter) & June Ann Gledstone (age 25 - born in Sunderland) and brother Thomas A. Gledstone (age 7)

Also, from the 1861 census;-
Thomas Lidd Gledstone (ie Frederick's father - age 13, scholar) was living at 9 Front St., Lanchester, Co. Durham with his father, John Gledstone (widower - age 55 - grocer - born in Cropton, Northumberland) and brothers & sisters Mary Caroline Gledstone (age 27 - born in Houghton Le Spring, Co. Durham), Ann Gledstone (age 23 - grocer's assistant - born in Haltonlee Gate, Northumberland), John Gledstone (age 17 - clerk at iron works - born in Hartley, Northumberland), Elizabeth Jane Gledstone (age 10 - scholar - born in Lanchester, Co. Durham), Caroline Hannah Gledstone (age 9 - scholar - born in Lanchester) together with a servant, Mary Isaac Berman (age 15 - born in Sunderland).

Going further back, to the 1841 census, John Gledstone (ie Frederick Ernest's grandfather - age 35) was living at River Green Mill, River Green, Morpeth with his parents John Gledstone (age 70) & Lydia Gledstone (age 65) and his brothers & sisters Elizabeth (age25), Jane (age 20), William (age 20), Dorothy (age 15) & Ann a(age 1).
*Note Jane & William may not have been twins as ages were often rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years on the 1841 census.
