Begin with your living family - ask your elders about their parents and grandparents as far back as they recall. You'll need to note full names, dates and places of births, marriages and deaths. Locations of family cemeteries is good also. Now you're ready to begin loading the information onto genealogy software to organize what you know and what you don't know, and begin documenting.
