Position:Home>Genealogy> Cousin or Uncle? (General George Armstrong Custer/Kuster)?

Question:

Cousin or Uncle? (General George Armstrong Custer/Kuster)?

I discovered that General George Armstrong Custer is a relative of mine. However, I'm having a difficult time figuring out if he is a cousin or an uncle.

My grandparents, Paulus Kusters and Gertrude Doors had 8 children. Two of their children were Arnold and Hermanus.

The first of these children, (Arnold Kuster), had George as a 5th great-grandchild.

The second of these children, (Arnold's brother--Hermanus Kuster) had my 2nd-great grandmother as a 5th great-grandchild.

George and my 2nd-great grandmother shared Paulus and Gertrude as their great-grandparents.

Because their 5th great-grandparents were brothers, would this then make George my uncle or my cousin?

I ask especially because they were born so many generations before me.

Thanks for the help! :)

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I was confused by your post, so had someone from Monroe County send me George's tree so that I could visualize this. Your 2nd great grandmother was George's 5th cousin. That makes you George's 5th cousin 4 times removed.
