William and his brother were Presbyterians who followed Ninian Beal during an uprising in Scotland. Defeated in 1653, many of them were beheaded or imprisoned. Some went on to act as police for the English in Ireland and later in the Barbados Islands in the West Indies, and then to America in Maryland. William homesteaded in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Upon the finish of his sentence, William built a farm by the name of Oxon Hill. He came to America in 1658, and brought his own family and that of his brother in 1663. David Milton Tannehill, son of Ninian Tannehill and Mary Prude , was born on November 24th 1824 in Bibbs Co., Alabama. David died on December 7th 1864. At the time of his death, David was a Confederate soldier, held prisoner in Pt. Lookout, Maryland. He was buried in Scotsville, Maryland, in 1864. Richard L. Tannehill, son of David MiltonTannehill and Nancy Murphy , was born on November 11th 1848 in Bibbs Co., Alabama, and died on December 7th 1917 in Winnfield, Louisiana. Richard was sworn as Sheriff in Winn Parish, Louisiana in May 5th of 1880 (see fig. 1). He served in that capacity for ten years. In 1892 he was a candidate for Governor of Louisiana on the Populist Ticket. In Winn Parish, he recieved a majority being, 1,001. He was the first elected Mayor of Winnfield in 1898. The Community of Tannehill, where he had a sawmill, was named for him. Known as "Old Man Fate," he was a leader in constructive work in the dark days of reconstruction.

His first marriage was to Lula Long, daughter of William Edward Long and Frances Woodruff.. The ten children of R.L. Tannehill and Lula Long were Edith Estelle, Antoine, Vivian, Nancy, Francis Marion, Elizabeth, Murphy, Nevin, Jack, and Dee Tannehill. (Photo of these children)

His second marriage, on January 23rd of 1877 in Vernon La., was to Maria Elizabeth Sellinger, daughter of John George Sellinger and Minerva Wyatt. She was born on January 3rd of 1858, near Wyatt La., and died January 4th of 1891 in Winnfeild La. The eight children of R. L. Tannehill and Maria Sellinger were Ella May, twins Lena & Ena, Richard L., Clarence Eugene, Herbert Ninian, George Milton, and Elizabeth.

Lena Tannehill married Charles Pace. Her twin, Ena Tannehill, died at age nine. Richard L. Tannehill married Elmer Patrick. Clarence Eugene Tannehill married Bertie Fushee. Herbert Ninian Tannehill married Ena Butler. George Milton Tannehill married Dora Schader.


Elizabeth Tannehill, daughter of R. L. Tannehill and Maria Sellinger, was born September 12th of 1897. She died in January of 1975. She married Rufus Shelby Walsh in Winnfeild, Winn Parish, Louisiana. Rufus was the son of Marcus Lafayette Walsh and Brunette Hearne. Rufus was born December 23rd of 1879 in Lebanon, Wilson, Tennessee. The five children of Elizabeth (Bessie) Tannehill and Rufus Shelby Walsh were Donovan Hearne Walsh, Rufus Shelby Walsh, Richard Lafayette Walsh, George Sellinger Walsh, and Joseph Beth Walsh.
