I know they're expensive but I want to save up for a test to find up my genetic make up

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Dna testing is being used in genealogy, but it can be confusing exactly what it does.
Broad dna testing is just that .. very broad. It can tell you that you have European, Scandinavian, Asian <fill in the blank>. Much of what it will indicate may be well prior to what you now know as Britain. It may well be far more generic than you expect. It will NOT tell you that grandpa Smith came from Germany.
The direct use in genealogy (specific family history) is growing, but there are certain elements. For genealogy, it MUST BE A DIRECT male descendent of the name. And it involves comparison to others. IE... ten living Smiths have already worked the "paper" records as far as possible, and all believe they are descended from Adam Smith, father of all Smiths. All 10 do the testing... 5 of them have the exact same results, showing the same exact ancestor somewhere. 4 of them have the same results as each other, but 1 marker different from the first 5. The 4 are related to each other, and probably some relationship to Adam...maybe a cousin of Adam's that no one knows about. The last guy matches nothing. Either Adam's wife was fooling around (or some wife down the line) or the one guy had no real interest in research, and copied some file offline without bothering to see the obvious errors in it.
