Remembering Carl Parsons
Carl Woodrow Parsons passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2007 at the age of 90 at Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was born in into this world in Marshall County, WV on November 2, 1916 to the Wilford and Rosa Belle Parsons. He was born again into Jesus Christ, baptized by C.D. Plum at 210 Cedar Avenue in Moundsville on December 9, 1929. He served the Lord faithfully all of his life, and for the last 37 years of his life served as an elder with the Tomlinson Run Church of Christ in Georgetown, PA. God alone knows the full measure of the work brother Carl accomplished in the kingdom of the Lord. We will be grateful for the rest of our lives for having known him and for having benefited from his leadership.
"Remember them... who have spoke unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation" (Heb. 13:7). "Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation" (Phil. 2:29).
In Joshua??s day, he challenged the children of Israel to choose Jehovah and to serve Him only. ??Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD?? (Joshua 24:14-15). The people responded to his challenge by openly confessing and wholeheartedly vowing to be faithful to God. They were stirred by Joshua??s dedication and godly example when he was with them. ??And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed?? (Joshua 24:16-17). But the best tribute to Joshua??s influence for good was not their response while Joshua was among them, but the fact that they continued to serve the Lord long after Joshua had passed away. ??And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that over lived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel?? (Joshua 24:31).
Many loving and heartfelt verbal tributes have been paid to brother Parsons in the past week; many of them moved me to tears. But how much greater honor can be given to the memory of a man who walked steadfastly before the Lord than to do so ourselves for the rest of our days, just as did the Israelites who remembered Joshua? Please take the time to read brother Parsons?? life plan written when he was 18 and lived until he passed from this life at 90. [prb]
