Question:

Where is a free search website for family history?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Regardless of what was said, there are free sites out there. I would gather what you can from family and such. Then try www.familysearch.com. That is the mormon site. Be carefull with it though. Occassionally, incorrect information is entered into the system because some of it is based on what people have found and people make mistakes. Always check the source of the information. But the census information has always been right on, and I've had very little problems with the other information either.

Another collection of sites that are totally free and will always be free are the Genweb sites. For the US go to http://www.usgenweb.org/projects/index.s... They are run by volunteers in order to make genealogy free for all. Many states and counties have their own genweb site with links to other pay and free sites. If you go to the archives section on the right side of the screen there is a search engine that searches more broadly.

Another favorite of mine is www.gencircles.com. This is what other people have for their family lines. Sometimes people have privy to information you can't get elsewhere. You can contact those that entered the information. You can sign up and pay, but that just lets you use their connections feature which is just a convenience, but not a necessity to view the information.

The same is true for www.ancestry.com/trees/awt/mai... This section of ancestry is free. There is also http://worldconnect.rootsweb.c... This one was started before the ancestry one and has always been free.

Ancestry is by far the best pay site and certainly worth it if you can afford it. However, a lot can be accessed on this site from your library's computers.

Oh yea. There is also the freebmd, freereg, and freecen sites for relatives in Britain. One of these (and maybe all) can be found at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.p...
They are free too.

Don't forget www.cyndislist.com. She has millions of genealogy websites listed. This is a totally free site of links to genealogy sites of all kinds. It is also very well organized and changes regularly.

Good luck.
