Has anyone been told they are of Black Dutch ancestory and have indian ancestors?

From what I have read on the internet, people of American-Indian ancestory said they were Black Dutch to actually hide they were American-Indian. This appears to have been the normal response during the early 1800s when Indians were persecuted. Can anyone relate and provide any further information? I do know that I have Cherokee in me and was told by my great uncle that we had Black Dutch ancestory.


Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My understanding is that "Black Dutch" (along with "Black Irish") tended to be a euphemism for Indian or Black heritage that, given the racism of the day, was prudent to conceal.
