How are racism and freedom related?

I'm doing a paper on freedom, and race is something I should include in it. Does anyone know of how racism and freedom are/can be related?

Racial discrimination can cause certain races to lose their lives or restrict their human rights.

Good examples of people who fought hard against racial discrimination in their own countries are Mahatma Gandhi and the reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
