Question:

First postmistress of Florida?

My great great grandmother, Matina Webster Dunning, has been said (family rumor) to be the first postmistress of Florida. I believe she lived in or near Osteen. I'm looking for some help on finding out if this is true. Any help would be appreciated!

I found Matina and her husband buried at this cemetery in Osteen, Volusia county. She was born in 1875, and d. 1959.
I didn't turn up the specific item you mention. She would have been 25 yrs old in 1900, so first postmistress (of Florida) seems to not fit exactly. That does not rule out her being (first) postmistress in a given TOWN, perhaps? Her death is just prior to when most ssdi entries are online, which does not mean she would not have social security... it just isn't likely to be online. If you were able to find her social security number in family records, I believe you can still send for her file that may specify her work records. It is not impossble that she lived/ worked in another town besides Osteen. Several persons here have ancestry access and may be able to verify that against 1920 or 1930 census records.
Another place to check is for an obituary.

this is the genweb page for Volusia county, seems to have some good resources, including names of 2 newspapers. Just scanning, the records online seem to just bump outside of 1959.. but it can lead to someone who has the knowledge of what would be available.
