Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Really, the answer is NOT that hard. You are not looking for anyone with the same name. You are looking for a specific individual person, who is your ancestor. Or, in other words, your search needs to have a focus and a plan.
It is repeated all the time over here. The normal game plan is to start with a KNOWN factor, in this case, it is YOU. Even if your name were Smith, not an issue. Block out the other Smiths out there. DOCUMENT yourself. Your documents (as analogy) show that YOU are the son of the John Smith Sr who married Mary Jones. You are going to do a family group sheet of John Sr and Mary, that lists the facts about THEM, ie date of his birth, his children, when and where he died. YOUR birth certificate LINKS you to this couple. Now you know your father is the John Smith born in Dallas, Texas in 1940. To find him, you know to be looking at a particular location (and presumably, you'll take a few minutes to know what records those are, and if they are available). Unless you find a record that says he lived in New York, you are going to focus on those records which are likely to produce what you want.
The process of building the foundation and documenting your links is what helps you. It tells you WHEN and WHERE you can expect to find info.
Translate that to grandpa.. you need to confirm when he was born, died, where he came from, who his siblings were. If he was born in Poland, and died in Penns., you will look at the more RECENT records first, in order to find the clue of earlier history. I recently ran across Wisniewski, and have it in my mother's family. I later learned that it is close to being the Polish version of Smith.
Don't throw darts, hoping to hit an ancestor by luck. Work on defining the target and look there. Don't worry about the earliest Wisniewski in Poland.. link back one generation at a time.
