Question:

Birth records?

my father was adopted, and now he's deceased.im trying to find out about our family history.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's going to be hard. You don't give an age for your dad, but I'll assume he was born before 1965. If that's the case, then there's not much chance of getting his adoption records opened, though it's not impossible. You would have to file a petition with the Clerk of the Court in the county where the adoption was finalized. Your reason would have to be pretty compelling, like the need to track a genetic disease. But it could happen.

The other part is that if he was older, his birth parents are probably deceased, as well. It's possible, though that they did sign up with one of the search registries and that the info is waiting there. Here's the primary site for that in Indiana: http://www.adopteeconnect.com/p/a/1015/...

Here's how the law in Indiana handles confidential information. I would read it very carefully. It does say that you are entitled to quite a bit of confidential information as his daughter, to the extent that the information was disclosed.

They note that the state uses a "Confidential Intermediary" system. That can be good or bad. What it comes down to is that person will open the file and review the information, copying whatever s/he thinks is appropriate. If the birth parents are still alive, it's possible contact could be made through the intermediary.

The other thing mentioned is that pre-1940 adoptions are no longer sealed. This may be a very good thing in your situation. The question is how much identifying information they'll release...and how accurate is the information that was provided.

Hope this helps. If you need a little direction at any point, drop me a note through my profile and I'll be glad to help however I can.
