How do you trace your americna indian heritage?

Whenever I ask my mother what are nationality is she just says heinz 57. She has told me that I ahve some indian in me also. I am looking to find out how much I actually have. I do not have access to any of my grandparents information and my mom is no help. My fathers side of the family is where i get most of my indian from. My father was killed in 2004 so I can not find anything out from him. And since we were really close to his side of the family I do not know how to locate this information. I was wondering if any one could give me some help. I am basically starting from scratch as you can tell.
