Can anybody help me?

I grew up in a very close family environment but know nothing about grandfather's side of the family. I know more than most people would about my Irish and German heritage, but I'm confused about my Native American heritage. My mom says her dad's parents were both half Cherokee and she lived the first nine years of her life on a reservation up in Montana. His familly name was suppossed to be Kaw and this is where it doesn't make sense. There are no Cherokee reservations up in Montana but there is a Kaw reservation up there. I want to find the family up in Montana but not much is known because my grandmother married my grandfather on a dare and was divorced from him within three weeks. Can anybody help me?

I can't ask a whole lot of people because most people that knew him or knew of him have passed away. My Mom says the last she heard of him was when she got the news that he had died of a heart attack back when she was 16.
