Question:

John Sill from Coschocton, Ohio, 1874?

I am looking for ancestors of John Sill, married to Mary Zinn, born Jan 14, 1874 in Coschocton, Ohio. I've heard his parents are John Sill and Mary Clark. I can't seem to find anything. Can anyone help me?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The next thing you will need to make a habit of in your genealogy research is knowing what county a place is in. I use mapquest.com and the county name is the same, Coshocton. On census then search for your surnames sill and clark and see who's there.

The only decade any Sill was enumerated that county was 1870, there was a John born 1827, wife Sarah 1839, dau Susan 1869.

In the coming 4-5 years any number of Sills may have passed through. 1870's a good decade to look at that state to see where Sill families are that your child could be born to four years later. 1880 census. Here are all the John Sill/s shown who were born in the 1870s, OH:

Name Parent or spouse names Home in 1880
(City,County,State) Birth Year Birthplace Relation
John Sill Joseph,
Justina Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH abt 1879 Ohio Son
John Sill Jacob, Mary Richland, Defiance, OH abt 1871 Ohio Son
John U. Sills Jacob, Mary C. Butler, Knox, OH abt 1879 Ohio Son
John R. Sills Hanover, Licking, OH abt 1874 Ohio Something other than a direct relationship
John Sill Chas., Johanna Toledo, Lucas, OH abt 1880 Ohio Son
John W. Sillis Peter, Christina Rice, Sandusky, OH abt 1873 Ohio Son

At familysearch.org you can see that the 'something other' is likely the one you're looking for, John & Sarah appear to be living with perhaps a nephew, George C born about 1857; daughter Susan's still with them too. Whoever he is, George is son of Philip & Roena, at Elk, Vinton, OH 1860.

1850 John Sill Jr 24 is at Malaga, Monroe, OH farming, has a wife Elizabeth & new baby girl. A John b 1812 PA is nearby but that's a stretch in ages: more work to do if that's yours.
