The Abernaki Nation was made up of many tribes that lived in the Northeast. The Abernaki, the Aroostook, the Penobscot, the Passamaquoddy, and the Androscoggin were only a few of the many tribes that lived in this region.

Small parties came here occasionally to fish and to hunt, but they were peaceable and friendly, and seemed desirous of being on amicable terms with the early white settlers.

when the first settlers came to Rumford, there were strolling bands of St. Francis Indians frequently in the settlement. They sometimes brought their furs here for sale, which they had secured in the region of the lakes and their tributaries

Androscoggin which in turn is derived from the name of an Indian tribe which lived on the banks of the river. The word Androscoggin is an Indian term meaning "fishing place for alewives" or "spear fishing."
